Charged with a crime? Call before you talk to anyone else.

What you do in the first days after an arrest can shape the outcome of your case. McCain protects your rights, explains your options in plain English, and fights for the best result — whether that is a dismissal, a reduced charge, a fair plea, or a trial.

McCain has stood on both sides of the courtroom: as a trial lawyer trained at the Cochran firm, and as a city’s chief legal officer. He knows how prosecutors build cases and where they come apart.

Common questions

The police want to talk to me. Should I?

Be polite, give your name, and say you want a lawyer. Then stop talking. Anything you say — even to explain — can be used against you. Call us first.

I was arrested. What happens next?

An initial hearing or bond hearing, usually within a day or two, where the charges are read and release conditions are set. Having a lawyer there matters.

Can an old conviction be cleared from my record?

Often, yes. Indiana’s expungement law and Illinois’s sealing and expungement laws each cover many offenses after a waiting period. We can review your record and tell you what qualifies.

I live in Illinois but was charged in Indiana (or the reverse). Can you help?

Yes. McCain is licensed in both states and appears in courts on both sides of the line.

Trent A. McCain, Esq.

Arrested or under investigation?

  1. Stay calm and be respectful.
  2. Say: “I want a lawyer.” Then say nothing else.
  3. Don’t consent to a search. Don’t post about it.
  4. Call us.
